Jakarta, Legal Literacy - After debates, the Working Committee (Panja) of the Bill on the Special Region of Jakarta (RUU DKJ) decided that the governor and deputy governor of Jakarta would still be directly elected by the people. This decision was made in a short time, only 5 minutes, at the RUU DKJ Panja Meeting held at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Monday (18/3/2024).
Previously, the mechanism for electing the governor and deputy governor of Jakarta had been debated and its discussion was postponed because there was no agreement between the RUU DKJ Panja from the DPR and the government. The DPR proposed that the governor and deputy governor be appointed by the president, while the government wanted to continue using the direct election system.
The decision to continue using the direct election system is expected to produce leaders who are more democratic and accountable to the people.
