Jakarta, Legal Literacy - The KPU (General Elections Commission) is optimistic that it can complete the national vote recapitulation and announce the winner of the 2024 Election today. Several provinces are still completing the vote count, and Bawaslu (Elections Supervisory Body) emphasizes the importance of adhering to the schedule. Administrative violations and lawsuits to the Constitutional Court are predicted to occur.
KPU Targets Announcement of 2024 Election Winner Today
The Komisi Pemilihan Umum (KPU) is optimistic that it can complete the national vote recapitulation from 38 provinces and 128 Overseas Election Committees (PPLN) on Tuesday (19/3/2024). This will allow the Komisi Pemilihan Umum to immediately announce the winner of the 2024 Election on the same day.
As of Monday (18/3/2024) afternoon, the Komisi Pemilihan Umum has completed the vote recapitulation from 33 provinces and 128 PPLN. The recapitulation for Southwest Papua will continue on Monday evening. Meanwhile, the last four provinces, namely West Java, Maluku, Papua, and Highland Papua, are scheduled to complete the national vote recapitulation on Tuesday.
"Once the national-level recapitulation is complete, the results of the 2024 Election will be determined nationally immediately," said the Chairman of the Komisi Pemilihan Umum, Hasyim Asy'ari in Jakarta, Monday.
The vote counting process at the national level began on February 28, 2024, for votes obtained from overseas voters. Meanwhile, the vote counting at the national level for 38 provinces began on March 9, 2024. This entire manual counting process must be completed no later than March 20, 2024, in accordance with the provisions in Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections, which requires that the vote counting at the national level must be completed within 35 days after the voting.
According to Hasyim, the election results can be determined without having to wait for the deadline for determining the results. After the vote counting at the national level is completed, the Komisi Pemilihan Umum can immediately determine the winner of the election. This also happened in the 2019 Election, where the determination of the election results was carried out on May 21, earlier than the deadline for determining the results on May 22.
KPU member, Idham Holik, explained that initially the KPU planned for the vote counting at the national level to be completed on March 18. The Komisi Pemilihan Umum had planned the vote counting for five provinces and one PPLN. However, only PPLN Kuala Lumpur and KPU West Java and Southwest Papua were ready. Meanwhile, KPU Maluku, Papua, and Highland Papua are still conducting vote counting at the provincial level.
