JAKARTA,LEGAL LITERACY - Former 10th and 12th Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla (JK), attended the Jakarta Corruption Court on Thursday (16/5/2024) to testify as a witness to lighten the burden for the defendant Karen Agustiawan. Karen was charged with alleged corruption in PT Pertamina (Persero) period 2009-2014.

JK's presence at the trial attracted a lot of attention, considering his role as Vice President when the corruption case took place. In his testimony, JK explained the national energy security policy, especially regarding Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which became one of the important points in the indictment against Karen.

JK stated that the policy regarding LNG was taken based on careful consideration and in accordance with the national energy conditions at that time. He also emphasized that there was no intervention from any party in the policy-making process.

Karen's legal advisor, Luhut Pangaribuan, hopes that JK's testimony can help reduce his client's sentence. According to him, JK has sufficient knowledge and experience related to national energy policy, so his testimony can provide a clearer picture to the panel of judges.
