WASHINGTON DC, LITERASIHUKUM.COM — The President of the United States Donald Trump announced that the US Navy will begin a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz after peace talks between Washington and Tehran in Pakistan ended without an agreement. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that ships paying “tolls” to Iran would not have safe passage, while the military move was described as a response to the diplomatic deadlock and the closure of shipping lanes by Iran.
Trump initially wrote that the US Navy would block all ships attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz. However, several hours later US Central Command (CENTCOM) provided a narrower explanation: the blockade would be implemented for ships heading to or from Iranian ports, while ships entering and leaving non-Iranian ports would not be stopped by US forces. CENTCOM also stated that the measure would take effect on Monday at 10:00 AM ET.
Iran threatens to consider US military action as a violation of the ceasefire
Trump's decision came after marathon talks US-Iran in Pakistan failed to produce a breakthrough to end the war. Reuters reported that the deadlock in the negotiations has once again shaken concerns over the fragility of the two-week ceasefire which had previously been announced, while also pushing the energy market back into turmoil.
The response from Tehran was also harsh. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard warned that any military vessel attempting to approach the Strait of Hormuz would be viewed as a violation of the ceasefire and would be dealt with firmly. On the other hand, Iran had previously restricted shipping lanes in the strait, which during the conflict disrupted the global energy flow. Reuters also noted that as of Monday, only one Iranian-flagged ship was still in the strait area, after three supertankers had passed through on Saturday.
