JAKARTA, LITERASIHUKUM.COM — The acid attack case against Andrie Yunus, an activist with the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), has now received international attention. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk expressed deep concern over the attack and asserted that the perpetrators must be held accountable immediately.

The statement was conveyed through the UN Human Rights account on the X platform on Saturday (14/3/2026). In his post, Volker Türk referred to the attack on Andrie Yunus as a worrying act of violence and emphasized the importance of protecting human rights defenders.

“Deeply concerned by the horrific acid attack against Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator for External Affairs of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS),” Volker Türk stated.

He also urged that the case be seriously investigated. According to him, those responsible for the attack must be brought to justice.

“Those responsible for this cowardly act of violence must be held accountable. Human rights defenders must be protected in their vital work and must be able to raise issues of public interest without fear,” he continued.

Occurred After Returning from a Podcast Event

Andrie Yunus was attacked by two unknown individuals on Thursday (12/3/2026) at approximately 23:00 WIB. The incident occurred while he was on his way home after attending a podcast event titled “Remilitarism and judicial review in Indonesia” at the YLBHI office, Jakarta.

Upon arriving at the intersection of Jalan Salemba I-Talang, Andrie was allegedly ambushed by the perpetrators and doused with a hard water. The attack resulted in serious burns to the victim's body.

According to information gathered by KontraS, Andrie suffered burns with a severity level of approximately 24 percent. The affected parts of the body include the face, especially the right side and right eye, both hands, and the chest. Of the numerous injuries sustained, the most serious condition is said to be in the right eye.
