Colonial Period and the Influence of Tin

The story of Bangka Belitung's history cannot be separated from the Dutch colonial period. When Europeans discovered the potential of tin mining in this region, Bangka Belitung became an important point in the trade of the metal. Mining towns began to develop, workers from various regions arrived, and the social structure changed quite rapidly.Although the colonial period left scars, there are also traces that have now become part of the region's identity, such as old buildings, settlement systems, and community economic patterns. Many families there still keep stories about their grandparents or great-grandparents who worked in the tin mines, as if connecting the past and the present conditions.

Nganggung Tradition

Tradition nganggung—bringing trays of food to be eaten together—is one form of mutual cooperation passed down through generations. Every time I see photos or videos of this tradition, I feel like I am seeing a miniature of a solid and communal society.
