JAKARTA, Legal Literacy - The Constitutional Court of Indonesia has set the deadline for accepting amicus curiae related to the 2024 Presidential Election dispute, with a deadline of 16:00 WIB on April 16, 2024.

The Meaning of Amicus Curiae

Amicus curiae, often referred to as "friend of the court," can influence the court's understanding and decisions in legal cases, although only those received before the deadline will be considered in deliberations.

As of April 17, 2024, the court had received 23 amicus curiae submissions, according to Fajar Laksono Suroso, spokesperson for the Constitutional Court. These submissions came from various groups such as academics, cultural figures, artists, advocates, and students, demonstrating the community's great interest in this legal process.

Currently, the court is conducting a series of judge conferences to thoroughly review each testimony and evidence presented during the trial. This intensive review process aims to formulate a well-founded decision, with all written summaries from the parties having been submitted to the court for consideration.

Fajar emphasized that while many are interested in submitting amicus curiae, only those that comply with the set deadline are reviewed in detail by the judges. This policy affirms the court's commitment to maintaining order and fairness in handling submissions.

The influence of amicus curiae remains an important element of public participation in the judiciary, reflecting community involvement in crucial national decisions. The court's final decision, which is eagerly awaited by the Indonesian public, is scheduled to be announced on April 22, 2024, following the conclusion of the judge review meeting scheduled to continue until April 21.

The ongoing legal process at the Constitutional Court illustrates the crucial role of judicial independence in resolving election disputes and affirms the importance of timely and considered contributions from various elements of society to constitutional law.
