DEPOK, LITERASIHUKUM.COM — Universitas Indonesia (UI) swiftly responded to the circulation of screenshots containing conversations with sexual harassment undertones allegedly involving several students from the Faculty of Law (FH). Addressing the public outcry, UI Rector Heri Hermansyah firmly stated his institution's commitment to not provide space for acts of violence and sexual harassment in any form on campus.
The university's top leadership assured that the rectorate is closely monitoring the ongoing investigation process currently being rolled out by the dean's office. "I have requested an explanation from the dean regarding this matter, and we are awaiting its progress. The rectorate will continue to monitor the comprehensive handling at the faculty level. Together, we will oversee and combat sexual harassment," Heri stated firmly on Monday (April 13, 2026).
Faculty's Firm Stance and Guarantee of Victim Protection
Echoing the rector's statement, the management of the Faculty of Law UI officially condemned all forms of behavior that degrade human dignity, especially if it violates legal values and academic ethics of the profession. Currently, the faculty's internal team is focused on conducting evidence tracing and thorough verification while upholding the principles of justice and prudence.
As a crisis mitigation measure, FH UI ensures that the safety of the academic community is a top priority. The institution has provided safe reporting channels for affected parties and those with relevant information, appointing the Student Affairs and Alumni Manager as the official contact person. The campus also urges the public and student elements to refrain from disseminating unverified information to maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
From a public policy and legal perspective, higher education institutions have an absolute responsibility to provide protection for victims based on the mandate of the Ministerial Regulation of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Number 30 of 2021 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (PPKS). If the obscene conversations in the digital space are proven to contain elements of the crime of Electronic-Based Sexual Violence (KSBE), this case is very likely to be drawn into the realm of pure law enforcement using the instrument of Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning Sexual Violence Crimes (UU TPKS). Transparency in the imposition of ethical and academic sanctions is now awaited by the public to maintain the dignity of national legal education.
