JAKARTA, Legal Literacy– The Indonesian government has not yet issued an open condemnation of the joint attacks by the United States (US) and Israel on Iran, which reportedly killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. As of Tuesday (4/3/2026), the government's official statement emphasizes the importance of restraint and encourages a return to diplomatic channels amidst the escalating conflict in the region.
The US-Israeli attacks, which began on Friday (28/2/2026), triggered a retaliatory response from Iran. Tehran reportedly fired missiles at several US military bases in several Middle Eastern countries. Meanwhile, Israel is said to have expanded its attacks into Lebanon, a region that is the base of the Hezbollah group, a close ally of Iran.
Indonesia's Stance: Encouraging Diplomacy and Offering Mediation
On the first day of the attacks, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released an official statement through social media. In the statement, Indonesia expressed regret over the failure of negotiations between the US and Iran, which then impacted the increased military escalation in the Middle East.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called on all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue and diplomacy. The Indonesian government reiterated the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each country, and resolving differences through peaceful means.
In the same statement, President Prabowo Subianto was said to have conveyed Indonesia's readiness to facilitate dialogue so that security conditions return to being conducive. In fact, if approved by both parties, the Indonesian President stated his willingness to depart for Tehran to conduct mediation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reminded that the increasing tensions have the potential to disrupt regional stability as well as world peace and security.
