MEDAN, LITERASIHUKUM.COM — The handling of the alleged embezzlement case of congregation funds of the Santo Fransiskus Assisi Aek Nabara Catholic Church Parish, North Sumatra, is entering a new phase. The former Head of Cash of BNI KCP Aek Nabara, Andi Hakim Febriansyah, is still being detained at the North Sumatra Regional Police. At the same time, BNI stated that all funds belonging to the Aek Nabara Parish Credit Union have been returned with a total of IDR 28,257,360,600.
The police stated that the case file is not yet complete or not yet P21 because investigators are still requesting additional information from BNI and matching the suspect's confession regarding the amount of funds actually used. In the initial investigation, the suspect allegedly admitted to only using around IDR 7 billion, while tracing of the entire flow of funds is still ongoing.
This case began in 2018 when the church cooperative management was offered an investment scheme called “BNI Deposito Investment”. The funds collected reached approximately IDR 28 billion from approximately 1,900 cooperative members, who, according to reports, mostly come from farmers and low-income communities. Later, the police and BNI stated that the product was not an official bank service and was not recorded in the company's operational system.
Investigation Not Yet Complete
This case was reported to the North Sumatra Regional Police on 26 February 2026. Investigators then named Andi as a suspect on 13 March 2026. According to the police, the person concerned had left Indonesia for Australia after first moving from Bali. He was finally secured with his wife when he returned to Indonesia through Kualanamu Airport on 30 March 2026. Until now, the police are still investigating the possibility of involvement of other parties, including the role of the suspect's wife.
In addition to examining the case administration, investigators are also tracing the use of money allegedly channeled into a number of businesses and assets. The police stated that the tracing process is not simple because it requires cross-agency coordination and further matching with banking data.
BNI Claims Complete Fund Return
Amidst the ongoing criminal proceedings, BNI announced on April 22, 2026, that the reimbursement of customer funds had been fully completed. The state-owned bank stated that it had transferred Rp 21,257,360,600 to supplement the initial reimbursement of Rp 7 billion, bringing the total amount reimbursed to Rp 28,257,360,600. BNI also issued an apology to the public, especially Catholics and members of the CU Paroki Aek Nabara, and stated that the settlement was completed faster than the initial target of April 24, 2026.
BNI emphasized that the case was an individual act outside the official banking system, authority, and procedures. The company also stated that this case was revealed through internal supervision and ensured that customer funds stored in official BNI products remain safe. On the other hand, the treasurer of CU Paroki Aek Nabara welcomed the full reimbursement. This case is ultimately not only about criminal matters and the return of losses, but also serves as a reminder of the importance of internal banking supervision and public vigilance regarding investment offers outside official channels.
