JAKARTA, Legal Literacy – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) stated that it needs information from the former Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi in the investigation of alleged corruption in the railway line construction and repair project within the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation. Investigators believe that information from the former Minister of Transportation is important because the project is spread across various regions of Indonesia.
KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo explained that the project currently under investigation covers a number of strategic points, starting from Sulawesi, East Java (Surabaya), Central Java (Semarang), the Jogja–Solo section, West Java, to Sumatra. With such cross-regional coverage, the KPK deems it necessary to explore information from officials who served during the project implementation period.
Budi Karya's Examination Has Not Been Rescheduled
The KPK had previously scheduled an examination of Budi Karya on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. However, he was not present on the grounds that he had another scheduled agenda. Until now, the KPK stated that it has not set a new examination schedule, but will ensure to inform the public if there is certainty.
According to Budi Prasetyo, the summons of witnesses in the DJKA corruption case aims to clarify the construction of the case, including the policy-making process and project implementation in the relevant budget period.
Construction of the DJKA Corruption Case
The alleged bribery case for the railway line project at DJKA originated from a hand-catching operation (OTT) conducted by the KPK on April 11, 2023, at the Railway Engineering Center (BTP) Class I for the Central Java Region, now named BTP Class I Semarang.
The KPK has named 10 suspects in this case. Four of them are suspected of being bribe givers from the private sector, while the other six are officials or state administrators suspected of being bribe recipients.
This case relates to a number of railway line construction and maintenance projects in the 2021–2022 fiscal year, including the Solo Balapan–Kadipiro–Kalioso double track project, projects in Makassar (South Sulawesi), construction and supervision projects in Lampegan Cianjur (West Java), and projects to improve level crossings in Java–Sumatra.
In the process, the KPK suspects that there was an arrangement of project winners through administrative engineering and intervention from the initial stage to the determination of the tender winner.
This case is one of the major cases in the transportation infrastructure sector that is still being investigated by KPK investigators.
